In the lives of Muslims in every country in the world the Islamic Law is of paramount importance. It contains strict regulations that govern the lives of believers and cover just about every aspect of daily life. It is specifically detailed about the food that Muslims may eat and the way in which it must be prepared. For Muslims, food is much more than just nutrition. It has a very serious impact upon their moral values and their spiritual life as well. That is why they will only consume Halal certified meals.

Anyone that wants to supply Halaal food, from manufacturers down to fast food outlets must apply for certification from a Halaal council. Halaal councils can be found everywhere where bigger populations of Muslims live. The application process is drawn out because the council conducts a thorough investigation into the operations of the applicant. They want to be absolutely sure that all the rules are followed.

Food that is deemed unclean or forbidden is called Haram. Muslims may not consume Haram food. This includes a ban on pork in all its different forms. Alcohol is also forbidden although some Muslim sects will allow it in moderation. Muslims may not eat blood or any of its derivatives. Any other animal that has not been slaughtered strictly according to the rules are also seen as unclean and therefore not allowed.

It is not just the types of food that Muslims may eat that are regulated. The entire manufacturing, packaging and preparation processes are also strictly controlled. Halaal food may never come into contact with other types of food. If it does, it must be thrown away. It is even necessary to use separate dedicated cookware and cooking utensils when preparing Halaal food. These must even be cleaned separately and stored away from other kitchen utensils.

Interestingly enough, it is not necessary to be from the Muslim faith in order to apply for certification. Anyone that can show that he is able to follow all the rules pertaining to Halaal food may apply. Applicants do not have to dedicate all their efforts to Halaal food only. They may also prepare Haram food as long as there is no cross contamination.

There are many people not of the Muslim faith that also prefer Halaal food. They believe that this food is healthier because it is prepared under such strict hygienic conditions. Ordinary food is not always prepared in strictly controlled environments. In addition, only the very best ingredients are used. They believe that Halaal food is not just healthier but also much more tasty and flavorful.

The market for Halaal food is a lucrative one. It is not surprising then that there are those that will supply food described as Halaal while it is not. Consumers can access the website of the Halaal council to check whether a specific outlet, product or restaurant have been sanctioned to offer Halaal food. It is also important to look out for the official logo of the Halaal council when buying food.

The rules pertaining to Halaal food are sensible and aims to make sure that Muslims do not consume food that are considered as unclean or unhealthy. There are no mystic rituals involved in the preparation of the food. The consumption of Halaal food is certainly not forbidden or discouraged by any other religion.
