By Amy Patterson

Mexican food tends to get a bad rap as a result of being calorie ridden. This can make someone who is watching their weight to stay away from these meals as a result of their nature. However, this does not have to be the case. You can still get to enjoy authentic Mexican food Houston even when you are on a diet. This is by taking certain steps.

Most of these meals come loaded with lots of cheese. This means extra calories. But this does not have to be the case. You can opt to completely leave out the cheese in these meals. This is whether you are ordering at a restaurant or whether you are making your own food at home. You can opt to either use low quantities of cheese, or you can opt to use other kinds of toppers instead. For instance, you can top up with vegies or guacamole instead of cheese.

These meals tend to have lots of spices. If you are making the meal for yourself at home, then consider using different kinds of spices that you like. For instance, you can use jalapenos, chili and even cumin. Experiment with different spices until you find what you like.

In order to control your calorie intake, it is essential that you order only small meals when you are out eating. For instance, instead of ordering combination meals when you go out to eat in restaurants, consider ordering individual items from the menu. Combo meals tend to be large and you might get tempted to eat everything that you are served.

Stay away from fried stuff. For instance, instead of going for crunchy tortillas that have been deep fried, go for the soft ones. You can also opt to go for soft tortillas instead of ordering chips.

Also, consider ordering beans, as they are a much healthier option as compared to other choices. The beans are quite tasty and you can order them with rice. If you are on a strict diet, then you can choose not to order the rice and just eat the beans.

As enticing as the dips can be, it is best that you avoid them due to the high calorie nature. Order alternatives such as salsa instead. You can use salsa as a topping or for garnishing. You can also opt to use guacamole as a topping instead. However, limit your intake since too much of it and the calories will add up.

Alternatively, you can opt to enjoy the full Mexican experience and eat whatever you want. The key thing to keep in mind is portion control. It is okay for you to eat the fried foods, chips and sour cream, as long as you eat them in moderation. There are also many vegetarian options to choose from. Even when you substitute the foods with healthier options, they will still retain their same great taste and flavor for a great experience.
