Here Is Information About Horse Fence

By Jennifer Parker

Horses are herbivorous animals, which means that they feed on grasses, leaves, and other forms of vegetation. As such, when being raised on a farm, it is important to keep them confined in one place. However, given their big and powerful nature, confining horses is something that is easier said than done. A weak horse fence can be easily kicked or trampled by these animals.

Compared to others animals horses are prone to fence injuries because they like jumping a lot. To manage this, fences must be designed in a way that they do not injure them as they try to jump or go through. This means that selection of spacing of the posts or horizontal lines must be done with care. Strength of the material is another factor to be given a lot of thought.

There are several different decisions that need to be made when one is trying to erect fencing fort horses. Usually, there are several decisions to be made, and compromise might be part of the process. However, no matter how much compromise is made, certain things cannot be changed or negotiated. An example of things that cannot be negotiated are the type of fencing to erect and what materials to use. Barbed wires and large wire mesh are some of the materials that can never be used no matter the situation because they are totally unsafe.

Barbed wires easily entrap horses as they try to jump over or run through fences. This is why they are not acceptable for use on this job. The spikes on the barbed wire can cause a lot of injury to the animal to a point of causing death or career-ending damage. If one settles for square mesh, the holes of the mesh should be less than 3 square inches. Squares that are too large usually have the hooves of the horses trapped and may cause injury.

When one is thinking about erecting a fence for their horse or horses, there are several factors that they must think about. These factors include budget, maintenance costs and requirements, aesthetics, number and size of horses, and the terrain. The ideal height for all fences meant for horses is between 4.5 and 5 feet. This height is high enough to keep the animals confined without any incidences of attempted escape.

The bottom part of the fence should also be constructed properly. A height of 6 feet to 8 feet above the ground must be observed when fencing. Fowls are safely kept within the confinement when this ideal height is observed. Horses also try grazing outside the confinement by sticking their heads under the fence. This height ensures they cannot do that.

Previously, these fences were predominantly made using wood. The wood used has to be properly treated and maintained. Various wood treatment methods to be used are available today. To ensure strength, the posts must be driven sufficiently deep into the ground.

Wood is slowly losing to other better new construction materials thanks to advanced technology. PVC has taken over wood in most farms as horse keepers prefer them. The aesthetic appeal and durability of PVC makes it appealing to many. Installing and maintaining PVC fences is also cheaper compared to wood fences. This is its other advantage.
