The Important Cattle Fencing Types Worth Noting

By Amy Taylor

In any farm, fences must be set up for various reasons. In agricultural farm, fences are basically used to keep away or restrict animals from moving to restricted areas. These structures are used to control the animal movement in and out of paddock. Cattle fencing can be made from a variety of materials.

For those farmers whose ranches are neighboring a forest, they will definitely have no option but to construct a fence. The forests are the hiding place of predators and in the absence of a strong fence, you will be endangering your livestock. Also to prevent your animals from carelessly mating, you need to separate the bulls from the heifers by use of a fence.

In some states, the height of a fence and the construction process is mandated by law. When a grazing field is divided into smaller portions or paddocks, you would not want your cattle grazing in the wrong paddock hence that is the sole reason for a fence. Also as a farmer, you would not like your livestock going to graze on another persons land or property.

Climatic conditions, terrain as well as number of animals one has will also influence what material to be used. The most ideal height for any kind of fence is 4 feet. At four feet, no predator can jump over the fence into your paddock and no animal can jump outside. Fences are used to define boundaries to avoid grazing on private property. One can easily be sued if they grazed on private land without consent of the owner.

The materials were barbed wires, woven wires, mesh wire, electrified wire and in some cases all these materials could be combined to make a fence. Board fence is also another common fence that is being used. These conventional materials were not completely abandoned and are being used till to date. If a fence is properly constructed using this conventional materials, it can still become an excellent fence.

Barriers are of three forms that is psychological, physical and in some cases a combination of both. Physical barriers will basically comprise of strong fencing materials that discourage any animal from jumping above it, going below or actually going through it. Psychological is actually playing with the animal mind where pain is inflicted on an animal so as to discourage it from ever challenging physical barriers.

The various types of fencing include high tensile fence which is very popular in many states. The structure has been proven to be ideal for livestock fence. Electric high tensile wire basically is quite easy to maintain any economical containment for herds. The second type is woven wire for livestock. This type is ideal for farmers who have small calves and want to protect them from predators.

Some of the maintenance needed on any fence includes replacing, retensioning corners and resettling staples. The advantages of using woven wire fence include, having a strong fence, secure, and relatively good looking. It confines almost all livestock that is including sheep as well as goats. The disadvantages associated with woven fence are, the high initial cost, the maintenance cost is quite high and requires a lot of labor hours to install.
