TABC Seller Server Certification Information

By Mattie Knight

The selling or serving of alcoholic beverage is a key part to many jobs, many of which are not bartending. For example, servers in a restaurant or hotel may be asked to do this, as well as cashiers in grocery stores. Before you make that first sale or take that first order, it is imperative to know the law as it pertains to alcohol, which can be learned through a TABC seller server certification course.

By law, there it is not a requirement that you take this course or any other in order to legally sell or serve alcohol. However, the TABC, which oversees alcohol sales, strongly encourages all sellers and servers to do so. The reason is because the law is very strict about who you are allowed to serve and at what times. Failure to follow these laws could lead to trouble.

Besides learning all the alcohol related laws that pertain to your job, you also will get lots of hints about how to handle certain situations that may arise during work. For example, a minor may try to buy alcohol using a fake ID, but if you take the course, you'll already know several tricks for spotting a fake license. You will also learn how to handle someone who is drunk that you can no longer serve to.

It is very important to note that you should not sign up for just any class that claims to be able to teach you about how to serve or sell in Texas. That is because the TABC has certified some retailers or other third party companies to do the teaching and certifying for them. If you take a course from a source that is not certified, there is no way to tell if they are covering all the pertinent laws or giving you the most current info regarding alcohol laws.

There are multiple ways to attend one of these classes, one of which is in a traditional classroom setting. This means you show up in person and listen to an instructor as they teach you what you need to know. There may be quizzes or testing involved, and the entire thing can be done in a matter of hours.

There are lots of reasons why a classroom may not work for you, in which case you may want to consider taking your class via the Internet. Lots of colleges now offer online courses, and this is similar to those. The streaming video may be broadcast live, or may be previously recorded for your convenience. Either way, you get all the same information that you need to get officially certified.

If you want to really go at your own pace and have the ability to go back and study the material again, then consider ordering a DVD course by mail. This is the same instruction in a classroom, but recorded onto a DVD so you can learn at your leisure.

The first time you get a minor trying to buy alcohol, it may be scary to handle the situation. However, with one of these courses under your belt, you can be assured that you have the knowledge you need to do things properly by following the law.
