DIY Handmade Christmas Wreaths For Decoration

By Katina Brady

During the holidays, there are many different ways to celebrate by decorating the home. Of course, the Christmas tree is a staple item at this time of year. However, handmade Christmas wreaths are becoming more and more popular, and they are actually very easy and fun to make as well. This way, unique and interesting ideas can come to life for a wonderful welcome at the front door for guests.

Traditional Christmas colours are red and green, followed by white and gold. These colours are representative of various aspects of the season, from the beautiful poinsettias that bloom at this time of year in radiant red, to the green of the tree and mistletoe. White is reminiscent of the snow that falls in winter, and then gold is grand and royal, representing a momentous occasion.

However, in the recent years, Christmas decorating has strayed away from the traditional colours. There are no strict rules that need to be followed, therefore whatever the choice of decor or colour scheme, something can be created to fit that. This is also great for those places in the world that don't have Christmas in a traditional sense, such as in the tropics where there is no winter or snow.

Once you have gathered together everything you need for such a project, it is not difficult to make the perfect wreath. You will need a wreath base as a foundation to build upon. You can make one yourself by cutting a doughnut shape out of wood, cardboard or even foam. However, why not save some time doing this altogether by purchasing a blank base from an art store? There are many different kinds available depending on the way you want your finished product to look.

Use a grapevine base, to make a wreath using plants and flowers. It is a good way to weave the chosen flora however you want. Keep it seasonal by using things like juniper, eucalyptus or pine cones. Larger decorations can be attached with a hot glue gun wherever there is an empty space between the greenery.

A great way to recycle old Christmas tree decorations in order to make room for a new set of ornaments on the tree is to turn the old ornaments into a new wreath. Any base can be used for this type of project as it will be completely covered anyway. Baubles and balls of different sizes are perfect to create something sparkly, fun and colourful. It becomes even more interesting if different patterns are on the baubles, or by weaving wired ribbon in and out of the loops on the baubles to create even more volume.

Paper and fabric are also good options for covering a wreath base. The range of colours available makes it a quick an easy task to match any chosen decor. Fabric strips can be folded and gathered or ruched to create volume, and then glued onto the base. A thick and heavy fabric like burlap is a good option. Accent with a deep red bow at the top of the wreath.

Alternatively, use carol sheet music to create paper loops and bows and glue them to the base. Holly and mistletoe can be used as nice accents against the black and white. Attach a red ribbon at the top to hang.
