A Look At Attractions In Fort Myers Florida

By Jony Mozen

Florida has a lot to offer for vacationers and those seeking a warmer climate during the winter months. Along with the warm weather and sunny days this state contains cities that offer widely diverse activities to visitors and citizens alike. A prime example of this diverse agenda can be found in Fort Myers Florida. Visitors to this city can expect to find a wide range of activities for themselves and their children.

The beach area is one of the main draws of this city, especially during spring break. You will find multiple water sports available including jet skiing, wave runners and para-sailing. There are also fishing charters available to hire for half and full day tours. You can also take advantage of multiple dining locations on the beach that face the ocean and provide beautiful scenic views.

The Edison Ford Winter Estates can provide a full day of activities that include historical gardens, buildings and a museum. The botanical gardens contain over five hundred unique plants, flowers and trees. They also have an orchid program and propagation greenhouse that is open to the public and shopping opportunities are available in the gift shops. Visitors are able to tour the winter retreat homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford among other buildings on the property.

A nature based and slightly more adventurous type of activity can be found in abundance. The Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve contains alligators, wild hogs and multiple exotic birds that live in this area. They have created a walk board that runs over a mile into the slough ending in a blind that allows photography opportunities of wild life for guests. Boat tours are also available throughout the day. Visitors are able to view and photograph egrets and herons during periods of low water seasons.

The Shell Factory is a site that provides a rain forest aviary that is open to the public. There are hundreds of exotic birds in the facility but it is only one of the attractions found there. There is also a petting zoo for children and a butterfly garden where visitors can experience interacting with these delicate creatures. Yet another natural experience can be found at Manatee World Tours. These gentle creatures are protected because they are endangered but boat tours are conducted by trained staff that helps to assure little or no distress is caused to Manatees by visitors.

In the center of town you can find the Art Center. Located in a neoclassical setting with pillars made of coral and limestone you find vibrant art exhibitions and art walks on a regular basis. The city similarly provides ninety minute guided tours of historic sites, reported haunted sites and the major art pieces located throughout the city on a weekly basis.

Air boat and riverboat safaris into the Everglades are available also. These tours last a full day and guests are encouraged to bring refreshments with them. Casino cruises can be booked in advance. They last approximately five hours and provide buffet style meals and drinks for guests. Games include roulette, black jack and slot machines for customers to enjoy while aboard.

Whether you are athletic and enjoy the beach and water sports or prefer to expand your knowledge of nature, art or history this city offers multiple opportunities to indulge your preferences.
