The southern coast of Portugal is renowned for it's long stretch of beautiful beaches and what seems like an endless coastline. Hidden coves and an impressive three thousand hours of sunshine each year, tempt hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. With a vast array of hotels and resorts to choose from, visitors could be forgiven for declaring that they are "spoiled for choice." The following paragraphs give some further details for some great vacation locations to stay in the Algarve.
The destination of Albufeira, comes from the Arabic name, Albuhera which translated means "Castle of the sea." This resort offers, what some would claim, the best beaches. Bars and restaurants are numerous, and are the setting for the busy nightlife. Golfers will enjoy some of the many courses, and all visitors are warmly welcomed by the locals. The glorious scenery can be enjoyed whilst sitting outside one of the numerous restaurants, who offer many dishes including the traditional piri piri dishes, sardines and balcalhow (dried, salted cod)
Steeped in history, visitors will have many places of interest to choose from. To list them all would be beyond the scope of this article, however, The Municipal Museum Of Archaeology, is well worth a visit and is crammed with artefact's connected with the history of the city. Similarly, the Torre Sineira (bell tower) was built in 1869 and contains a belfry with eight huge bells.
Vilamoura has contrasting scenery, with some areas covered by pine forests and others open marshlands. The large new marina invites dozens of cruise and sailing ships each week, and the harbor is dotted with restaurants and bars. Pretty white washed houses dominate the town, and there are plenty of sporting and leisure facilities to occupy any visitor.
The main church is situated in Quenenca and is believed to have been built around the 16th Century, offering just one of the venues to be enjoyed by those interested in history and culture. Likewise, there many beaches and golf courses to visit.
