The African continent is huge. From the mystical romance of Egypt to the wide open spaces of the plains, there really is something for everyone. In the past few decades South Africa has been trying hard to generate new forms of revenue and develop a sustainable economy. With this in mind the Cape Winelands have become part of the tourist trail. This beautiful area is home to several hundred vineyards and farms that produce many different varieties of grapes. From these an outstanding selection of wines are bottled every year.

Over the past thirty years the wine route has become a very popular tourist destination. There are so many first class places to stay and every possible need is catered to. In addition to the local wines there is an abundance of freshly made local food, and places to stay that are suitable for the whole family.

Perhaps the most well known of the wine growing regions is Stellenbosch. The name is synonymous with miles of vineyards and a fantastic range of top quality products. Many of the vineyards are open to the public and they can see how the wine is produced from how the grapes are grown to how the wine is bottled and labeled. It really is a fascinating process that keeps many people in business.

Collectively the regions are known as the Boland, the Afrikaans word for an upland. The Franschhoek Valley region has been producing quality wines for over three hundred years. The original French Huguenot settlers were keen to plant vines and cultivate some really special vintages. They really did an amazing job and the beautifully laid out farms are still a job to see today.

The local people refer to the wine growing region as the Bolands, which is an Afrikaans word for the uplands. The region encompasses the best known region of Stellenbosch, but also the beautiful and productive Franschhoek Valley which has been growing grapes for over three hundred years. In addition the Constantia region is also very well known and has been producing top quality wines for well over a century.

There are an excellent range of places to stay. These range from family run bed and breakfasts to luxury hotels. Many of the farms are now diversifying and taking in guests as a way to help support them. Some even offer sites for weddings and conferences that are really outstanding.

The Cape wine growing areas are providing a wonderful boost to the economy of the country. They are showing the world that South Africa is a major playing in wine production and also in Fair Trade practices. People at every level are benefiting, from a small village bed and breakfast owner to the luxury hotels.
