Koh Phangan in Thailand is one of the islands that many people love to visit. It is known mostly for its Full Moon Party, which takes place every month. I have been to this awesome event a couple of times. Although it is on every month, most people visit this place in large numbers between December and March. The majority of people come to Koh Phangan to relax at the great beaches, as well as for the the Full Moon Party.
I think it was December 2008 when I first went to Koh Phangan. I know it was a Christmas anyway and there just happened to be a full moon at the time. Wow, was this place a mind opener. My friend Chrissie and I had a blast out our first ever Koh Phangan Full Moon Party. The Full Moon Party happens at a place called Haad Rin Beach. This place is a really cool area in general and there are plenty of food and drink options here. It was here that I first tried authentic Thai cuisine. I was hooked from the first mouthful!
The main drink at the Full Moon Party comes in a bucket, who knows what is actually in them though as Chrissie and I didn't try them out. We bought some charcoals at the local supermarket that we used to light a fire that kept us warm along the beach. You can also participate in a fire rope jumping which was really exciting to try, but I suggest only do it when you are sober. There is plenty to see and do at the Full Moon Party and there are a number of street performers or buskers to keep you entertained.
I have never found getting accommodation an issue on Koh Phangan, since the place has several hotels, hostels and resorts right near the beach. We always stay at Seaview Sunrise Resort located at the far end of Haad Rin Beach. Although there are enough resorts and hotels for accommodation, sometimes it is best to make your booking in advance because of the high number of people visiting for the Full Moon Party.
The Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan is pretty easy to get to, but unfortunately there is no airport on Koh Phangan so you have to get there by ferry either from Surat Thani on the mainland or from Koh Samui, the island next door. The closest airport is actually on Koh Samui, so you can fly there and then get the ferry over the Koh Phangan. If you're on a budget there is a train or buses from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then just hop on the ferry out to Koh Phangan. If you're not into the independent travelling then a few tour groups operate tours to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party.
As I explained earlier, the Thailand Full Moon Party is hard to explain to someone who hasn't been before. You really have to go and do it for yourself to get a feeling for what it is like. I believe that the Koh Phangan Full Moon Party is well worth the trip though if you're ever in Thailand. Actually do you recall the Leonardo De Caprio movie, The Beach? The Full Moon Party was portrayed in that movie.
