Four Coffee Facts Which You May Find Fascinating

By Debrah Elliot

When you see statistics telling you that about 400 billion cups of coffee are being enjoyed by people worldwide every year, you can't possibly claim that it is not one of the most popular drinks. Since the first coffee house opened its doors in Constantinople around 1475, coffee shops have sprung up around the globe and pretty much seem to be located on every street corner. If you want more interesting facts, then maybe you should keep reading.

It all began when some Ethiopian farmers noted that the goats they were tending seemed to have a bit more pep after eating the berries of the coffee plant. Because they noticed this effect, they too tried to eat those berries and found that the berry seemed to have the same effect on them. This is how coffee-eating started and it soon spread and became highly popular throughout Africa. These early coffee lovers would mix the berries with some fat and eat away, enjoy that boost of energy you get from caffeine.

It is rather common for us to believe that caffeine's purpose is merely to give one that extra energy but this is not its only purpose and there is a reason why caffeine is an important part of a coffee plant. The truth is that caffeine helps in the pollination process of the coffee plant by attracting bees that are agents of pollination and love the caffeine. Also, slugs and other animals intending to harm the coffee plant stay away from these plants because caffeine is a toxin to them. This is how caffeine is also able to give protection to the plant.

One thing people, especially those overly conscious of the weight gained, must love about coffee is that it has almost no calories even when it contains a minimal amount of fat. Expect that your regular cup of filtered brewed coffee contains only about half a percent of fat. This is not the same with espresso though as this one contains fat of about 2.5%.

Many notable people love coffee to the extreme. For instance, Theodore Roosevelt consumed coffee amounting to a gallon a day. Another bit of trivia is that the French writer, Voltaire also drank coffee at an average of 50 cups in a day. Don't think that this is being recommended though as it is not, being that it is rather dangerous and even perhaps psychoactive. Understand that really high amounts of caffeine ingested might be highly lethal as well. Death may come to anyone who intends to consume a hundred cups of caffeine which is why it is not recommended. Positive point though - that coffee when taken in safe amounts can give you health benefits because of the antioxidants.

Los Angeles may be able to offer you with an edge through Culver City's Island Monarch Coffee, serving no less than the best coffee.
