Grading Italian Olive Oil, One Type From Another

By Robert Sutter

If there is one item which has the most important grades to speak of, it would have to be Italian olive oil. This is the kind of item that can help a number of consumers and I believe it to be one of the most healthful items out there. However, not every grade is treated the same and it is up to you to assess all of these types, being able to tell one type from another. In order to make the best choice on the matter, here are some examples which are worth keeping in mind.

When you're talking about the cream of the crop, you want to talk about extra virgin Italian olive oil. Authorities along the lines of Unaprol clearly understand the many factors associated with this oil type, low acidity being one such factor. You should also take into account that there's far greater flavor on this item's behalf as well. Make sure that you keep these in mind because I believe that these aspects will be able to help a number of recipes become tastier, not to mention healthier.

Virgin oil is another one to consider, though I don't many people understand the extent of the differences. You may believe that these are generally the same but the one way in which they differ has to do with acidity levels. Extra virgin has less than 1% acidity, which is why so many people go for it. The basic virgin variety, by comparison, falls between 1 and 3.3% acidity. It may not seem like a tremendous difference but those are the rules as far as classification is concerned.

Light oil is graded as one of the lowest, though it's surprising that so many people put it to use. Typically, it has to do with cooking purposes, since many individuals view it as the easiest oil to bring into the heat. However, it's not exactly low in calories and the fact that its flavor isn't exactly as pungent as extra virgin doesn't exactly help matters. Add in the fact the health properties associated with the other two types aren't exactly the same and you're better off passing on this.

Italian olive oil comes in a number of grades, which goes without saying. However, I don't think many people truly understand the grades in question and all of the health benefits which hare tied into each of them. I think that they are graded differently for a number of reasons, as the aforementioned choices had listed. You have to be able to assess all of the facets of each type and go one to select the proper oil that can be used in the long term.
