Those who are novices regarding outdoor life and camping should consider purchasing a large camping kit designed to fit in a backpack. Those with more experience can select a smaller kit, such as those designed to be carried in a small spaces such as a purse or tote bag.

It is wise to pack items that will definitely be used and disregard those that may simply take up space for no reason. For example, a knife is obviously a very important part of a major survival kit. Each item chosen should fulfill a definite function regarding the provision of shelter or food.

When organizing the required items, it is essential to give thought to the size of the kit. When the ensemble is completed, it should be easy to carry and contain only durable, high-quality provisions and equipment. It is unwise to cut corners when purchasing such objects, as poor quality tools or equipment will not be very helpful if a catastrophe occurs.

Tins in which water can be boiled are also good choice of items.

Most experts suggest adding a whistle to the ensemble. A whistle can be used as a distress signal, or it can help a person to locate his or her family and friends if the group becomes separated. Another good tool for sending signals is an LED flashlight. Not surprisingly, a conventional flashlight should also be purchased.

Fishing equipment and traps are also objects that one may wish to invest in when assembling such a kit. One should collect hooks, strong fishing line, and even trip wire if it is available. Naturally, bringing nonperishable food that can be cooked over fire is also in one's best interest.

A cigarette lighter or a generous supply of matches are also essential items. Fire starting sticks are good choices well. Finally, a first aid kit including antiseptic, Band-Aids, gauze, and possibly painkillers and antibiotics should be added. Ultimately, those who invest in emergency survival kits will be well prepared should a natural catastrophe or man-made disaster occur.
