A Beginning Gardener's Guide To Making Hanging Flower Baskets Missouri

By William Gibson

Any gardener will tell you how happy and cheerful plants can make you feel. If you lack the space for flower beds you may want to try looking at options like hanging flower baskets Missouri instead. If you are not sure whether you want to buy pre-fabricated options or you want to build your own, here are some things to consider that may make it easier for you to make your decision.

One reason that many people have trouble building a basket is that they do not create a base that is sturdy enough. While you may be tempted to use thin plastic baskets you may find that they are not strong enough or large enough to stand up to much wear and tear. If you want something strong that also looks beautiful and natural, you may want to try working with a wire basket that is lined with sphagnum moss sheets. Soak the moss and place it inside the form, making sure there are no gaps. That can prevent soil from escaping.

Sphagnum moss is great for use in hanging baskets. It needs to be saturated with water when you are building the basket or adding it to the soil. It will release that moisture over time and will help keep the plants from drying out.

Soil is critical to the health of your plants. Keep in mind that this is what the roots will live in and healthy roots need good soil. If your plants do not have big enough root systems they will not get enough water or nutrients and will not look as good as they can. Consider adding sphagnum moss in with your mix or choose a mix that is designed for planters or hanging baskets.

Once you have the basket ready and full of soil you can start adding plants to the basket. You can choose all one variety or you can add a mix. If you are adding a mix, it is a good idea for you to pick plants that all do well in the same lighting conditions. That way you won't have half of your plants dying in sunlight that is needed to keep the other flowers alive.

The number of plants you add to the basket is also something to think about. Don't overcrowd your planting. The plants are going to get bigger and if you put too many in they can actually end up getting sick and dying off. This is definitely something you do not want.

Once your basket is ready, you can hang it and begin to care for it. You will want to make sure that the basket is in a somewhat sheltered location. Keep in mind that depending on where the basket is placed it will be affected by a lot of wind and sun. Check it often to make sure that the soil has not dried out. Water it liberally so that the roots can get a good drink. If the leaves look burned, try moving the basket to another location so that the plants have a chance to recover.

Some people prefer to buy baskets instead of making them. You can find them ranging in size from very small to quite large. Look at nurseries and home improvement shops. Speak to the staff to find out which varieties will do best when hanging outside your home and how to look after the baskets once you get them home.
